How many different types of alien have been encountered?

It is the night of 26th December 1985. Before going to bed, a man sets the alarm and locks the doors of his house in the country, a couple of hours' drive north of New York City. He retires for the night earlier than usual, but in the small hours of the night a disturbance wakes him. He sits up in bed, but the bedroom alarm panel shows no intrusion.

He contemplates getting dressed and patrolling the snow-covered grounds around the house, but he is stricken with fear. Sleep seems a remote possibility, but gradually he relaxes and begins to drift off. Again, he is disturbed - snapped awake by an unwelcome noise, He senses a presence in the room, and with rising panic reaches for the light switch. As he moves, a shape rushes towards him with incredible speed, and his conscious thoughts are suddenly switched off.

Surreal Spectacle.

The freezing temperature of the outside world brings him to his senses, but the images before his eyes are surreal and dream-like. Strange creatures busy themselves around him, and, with a tremendous sensation of acceleration, he looks down to see the forest floor receding below him. Again he looses consciousness.

He awakes to find himself in a small, foul smelling circular room. A being appears. It is slender, about 1.5 metres tall, and hairless. There is barely a trace of a mouth or nose on its leathery, yellow-brown face, but its eyes are mesmerizing. They are bulging, slanted and as black as the night itself.

Without warning, the examination begins. A shiny, hair-thin needle is inserted into the mans brain, followed by a painful anal probe. Finally, an incision is made on his right forefinger. The next thing he is aware of is the morning sunlight in the forest, and the fact that he is alone.

Famed Abduction.

The witness in this case was Whitley Strieber, perhaps the most famous UFO abductee in the world. His first conscious memory of his encounter with the so-called 'Grey' life-form - and its appearance on the cover of his best selling book, Communion - has made this alien type the most recognizable of all alleged extraterrestrials.

However, despite the fame of the Grey, few people are aware that Strieber encountered three other types of creature that night. One was a robot like being that initially led him out of the bedroom. Then, in the forest, came a large number of short, stocky beings in dark blue overalls. They had wide, blue faces, 'glittering, deep-set eyes', pug noses and broad, human-like mouths. Later, inside the circular room, there were a number of Grey-like beings, but with eyes that, although black, were as round as buttons.

Strieber's experience is by no means unique. While virtually every abduction case involves Greys, witnesses, whether in the US, Europe or elsewhere, usually recall the presence of a variety of of aliens during their experiences. Typical are the results of a recent survey of Dutch abductees conducted by Hilda Musch, a therapist in the Netherlands. She found that 85% of abductees reported encounters with 'different sorts of beings'.

In fact, the variety of reported alien life-forms over the last 100 years has led sceptics to point out that there are as many types of aliens as there are people that report them. While there is some truth in this, there is also a degree of consistency to the reports. All the aliens seen over the past century can be categorized into one of four classes.

Array of Aliens.

The first class, the Humanoid, are beings with an essentially human shape. The second, the Animalian, refers to entities that are more animal-like, while the third class, Robotic, describes entities with a distinctly mechanical appearance. About 95% of alien reports fall into these three classes. The remaining 5% fall into the catch-all category labelled Exotic.

Each class of alien can be further divided into types. The most recognizable type of Humanoid is called Human, simply because it is nearly impossible to tell 'them' from 'us'. Then we have the Short Greys - the main alien type allegedly witnessed here on earth. A subset of these is the Short Non-Greys, so named because, unlike Greys, they exhibit extreme hairiness or green skin.

The second major class of beings - the Animalian - contains entities as diverse as Bigfoots, swamp creatures and goblins. All Robotic aliens, on the other hand, fit comfortably into one or two types. If the robots appear entirely metallic, they are so named, whereas if parts of the aliens resemble flesh, they are called Fleshy Robots.

Likewise, the Exotic class of aliens are of two main types - Physical, if they appear completely solid, or Apparitional, if they are at least partially transparent.

This variety of aliens is, perhaps, of no real surprise. Look, for example, at the variety of life on earth. And consider the huge number of aliens allegedly visiting us.
