Anomalous objects have been surgically removed from the bodies of alleged abductees. Is this proof of alien contact? Since his childhood, Pat Parrinello has been experiencing strange phenomena. At the age of six, he awoke in his North American home to find himself paralyzed and in the presence of a brilliant light. And so began many experiences over the years in which he claims he is constantly monitored and investigated by large-headed beings known in UFOlore as 'greys'. Unlike many alleged alien abductees - who resort to the controversial field of regression hypnosis to extract a memory (or, as sceptics would say, a fantasy) of what took place - Parrinello has full conscious recall of his experiences. He remembers not only being abducted, but also being taken into a strange room, where the alien entities perform medical examinations. Alien Operations. It was after one such experience that Parrinello had the feeling that the aliens implanted a small device somewhere into his body. And he is not alone - there is a steadily growing band of allege abductees who recount similar tales of being implanted. The quest to find these implants and to prove them to be of extraterrestrial origin has been the great passion of many researchers during recent times. Most of these hopes have come to nothing. But that was not the case with Pat Parrinello. In August 1995, along with a woman ('Janet') from another part of North America who had objects embedded in her left foot, Parrinello became one of the first to undergo surgery on an attempt to retrieve this possible alien artifact. the surgical procedures were performed by Dr roger Leir in his offices in Ventura, California. both abductees were brought to him by UFOlogist Derrel Sims, who orchestrated the unique investigation. The surgery had to be carried out under strict security. Dr Leir feared for his licence by engaging in this unconventional pursuit, and claimed that, 'people with credibility who put themselves forward in this field can wind up out of business.' Despite his fears, Leir documented the operation in front of video cameras. During the operations, Leir tried an experiment. With the objects still in place inside the patients bodies, he tapped them gently. Parrinello and Janet were both under a string local anesthetic at the time, yet both jerked back in response. Janet almost leapt from the table. the anesthetic should have deadened all such activity, and Dr Leir remains mystified by these reactions. Magnetic Mystery. Another discovery was that the object inside Parrinello was magnetic. It produced a massive reaction in a meter designed to measure electromagnetic field strength. After the object was excised - which proved quite tricky, because the magnetized device kept sticking to the metal blades of the surgical implements - this magnetism dissipated. By the end of the surgery, an object 4mm by 2mm had been retrieved from Parrinello. It was dark in colour and covered in a membrane of haemoglobin and keratin (proteins found in the body). This casing, similar to that which eventually covers all foreign bodies entering the body, was later show to have a DNA match with Parrinello. However, Leir was certain that it was not a cyst, and claimed he had seen nothing like it before. Also, it was so tough that it could not even be cut open by a scalpel, and it contained numerous nerve endings, probably explaining the patients response when it was touched. Two objects of similar composition - one of which was triangular in shape and measured 1.5mm by 1.5mm - were removed from Janet. All three implants were then taken by Derrel Sims to the University of Houston for more detailed examination. Alien Objects? Did these tiny objects, less than a centimetre across, find their way into the body by some natural means? Or were they placed there by an alien intelligence? This has been the focus of research since they were removed from the witnesses. Beneath the membrane, the objects appear to be composed of black and shiny metal strips. And chemical analysis suggests the presence of boron - a substance not found naturally in the body. When subjected to ultra-violet light, the implants also glow with a green colouration. Sims claims that he had noticed the same effect on the bodies of other abductees - whom, he suspects, may also have implants under the skin. Indeed, during further experiments carried out in 1996, Sims claims to have recovered a further 13 possible implants from the bodies of abductees. Sceptical Analysis. Not everyone is convinced by this remarkable investigation, however. Philip Klass, aviation journalist and arch debunker of UFO's, notes that no provable extraterrestrial link has been found with any of the implants. Nor has any obvious purpose to these devices been uncovered. He feels that they could be mundane growths inside the body that go undetected for years because they cause no pain or discomfort. Klass also alleges that Parrinello reported having a swelling in his hand as long ago as 1984. Might this suggest that his 'implant' was something he had lived with for a long time and whose origin was probably, therefore, terrestrial? The Implant Story. Implants are a relatively recent feature of the abduction scenario. Just as claims of 'spacenapping' postdate the birth of modern UFOlogy by more than a decade (the earliest reported case being in late 1957), the discovery that scars were appearing on the bodies of abductees did not come until about 1966 - and these were not recognised in any numbers until the mid 1970's. Like implants, these scars have had their critics. The vast majority of cases seem to have occurred in the USA, scars being much rarer in other countries even where there are numerous abductions. Of course, it is possible that less effort is made to search for them outside of North America. Some researchers also note that surveys have suggested that as many as one in three people can find an unexpected mark on their body, if asked to look for one. These are people who have never seen a UFO - let alone professed to an abduction. Does this mean that a third of the population has been secretly 'spacenapped' and then medically examined? Or are the marks simply left over from long-forgotten childhood bumps and scrapes? History of Implants. Researchers first began to report that some abductees believed objects had been placed inside their bodies in the late 1970's. Most often these implantations were said to occur by forcing the device up through the nose, and alleged abductees would awake from the experience with nosebleeds. Bloodstained bedclothes frequently provided the first clue to researchers and witnesses that abduction may have occurred. During the 1980's, the number of cases rose dramatically until about one on four abductees were reporting such things. Points of entry were becoming more varied, with the head, ear and mouth being cited as well as the nose. Implants in other parts of the body - such as the hand or the foot - such as those investigated by Leir and Sims in 1995 - have been very uncommon. Open Wide. One of the first pieces of direct evidence - as well as one of the few implant cases not to come from the USA - was investigated by social worker and UFOlogist Keith Basterfield in South Australia. The events involved 'Susan', a young woman from Adelaide who claims to have had her contact with aliens in 1971 when she was ten years old. Various encounters followed, involving periodical medical examinations which she believed were carried out in order to monitor her development. Two types of entities were involved in Susan's abduction: small beings with large heads akin to the 'greys', who appeared to perform all the menial work, and a much taller, more human-like being, who seemed to be in command. In 1991, during routine dental treatment, Susan's dentist produced an X-ray that showed a shadowy, unidentifiable object inside her mouth. A second, more detailed, scan was arranged for a few weeks later. This time, it found no trace of the mystery object. Susan told Basterfield that she had experienced a further abduction between the X-ray sessions, and suspected that the aliens had removed the implant to prevent its discovery. (Sadly the X-rays have since gone missing.) |
