The most haunted house in the World?

In 1863 in the English Village of Borley, 100 km north east of London, a rectory was built on the site of an old parsonage. It was to become the world famous as a haunted house, due the large variety of ghosts and strange happenings that occurred there.

By 1939, the house had been burnt down, there had been over 200 reported sightings of ghosts. Nothing is left of the rectory today except the many stories, and a host of unanswered questions.

Those that live in the village of Borley, say that the rectory was haunted by a ghost of a nun, and had been since it was built. She often used to be seen wandering through the grounds of the rectory, along a path known as the ‘nun’s walk’.

Borley rectory was built by the Reverend Harry Bull, and as part of the plans he had a summer house built that faced the nun’s walk, so that he could sit and watch the nun pass. There are reports that she startled people who were visiting Harry because she used to stare in through the window at them.

A number of other unexplained occurrences happened at the time, these included:

A phantom coach and horses racing along the driveway.

Bells ringing.

Objects flying about the house, with no explanation.

Voices, footsteps, figures and even strange smells.

In 1930 the Reverend Foyster and his wife Marianne moved into the rectory, soon after disturbing words and messages started to appear on the walls. One of them said ‘Marianne please help get’.

In 1937, the renowned ghost hunter Harry Price, rented the rectory, he and his team of 48 observers built up a large file on the happenings in the building, including the nun and ghostly shapes passing through the walls.

The rectory was destroyed by fire in 1939, and Harry Price returned in 1943 to continue the investigations, during this time he found a female jaw bone while digging in the cellar.

Inside the Rectory.

Not only the outside was haunted, it was said that nearly all the rooms inside the house were also haunted. They include:

The first floor landing was known as the ‘cold spot’, when people stood there they felt extremely cold, test done there proved that the temperature there could be as different by as mush as 6 degrees.

The main staircase was where footsteps were heard, on one occasion a rectors wife was followed upstairs by the ghost of a former rector. The ghosts seem to have enjoyed throwing things down the stairs, as things that could break such as bottles that were in locked rooms were found broken at the bottom of the stairs a few days after they went missing.

The study, was where Harry Price set up his base, he heard the key turn in the lock of its own accord.

The bedrooms above the kitchens, were where the sounds of footsteps were heard, and the doors locked and unlocked themselves.

The bathroom was also haunted, there appeared spirit writing on the wall outside, and one woman got a black eye when she was hit in the face by an invisible force.

The ‘Blue Room’ (the main bedroom) was the most haunted room in the building. Things threw people out of bed, objects flew around the room, before vanishing.

The kitchen used to have the bells ring with no apparent reason, even after they had been disconnected. While the crocks were thrown around.

Henry Bull, had the window to the conservatory bricked up, due to the nun looking in the window at them while they ate.
