Lady Jane Grey |
Other Information |
||
| Lady Jane Grey was the granddaughter of Mary Rose, Henry VIII's youngest sister. On the death of Edward VI in 1553 she was therefore one of those in line for the throne although the next heir should have been Henry VIII's daughter Mary, his child by Catherine of Aragon. Jane was proclaimed queen but after ten days was arrested and Mary assumed the crown. On 12 February 1554 her husband, Guilford Dudley, went to his death; his ghost has been seen in the Beauchamp Tower of the Tower of London, quietly crying, perhaps in anticipation of the execution. Lady Jane was executed the same afternoon and has reappeared many times since. On 12 February 1957, 403 years to the day after Lady Jane Grey's death, a guardsman named Johns in the Tower of London saw a likeness of her on the battlements above him. He alerted a second guardsman who confirmed the sighting. |
